One of the most difficult times that we have to face is the devastating period we go through when someone very dear and precious is no longer with us. The feelings of bereavement and deprivation overcome us and we tend to go into a state of depression and grief. It is at this stage that we require the emotional support of close family and friends. Islam teaches us to condole with our brothers and sisters in the way of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
When a Muslim passes away, we would usually hear a Muslim says to another Muslim “Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun” which is the Rumi writings for ‘We surely belong to Allah and to Him we shall return’.
However, it is not only related to just death per se, but it can also be said when someone experiences a tragedy in life, loses something, suffer a setback or harm.

“O Allah! Forgive [the deceased], elevate his status among the guided people and look after the family that he left behind. O Lord of the universe! Forgive us and him, comfort him in his grave and lighten his stay (in the grave).” [Sahih Muslim]
O Allah, forgive and have mercy upon him, excuse him and pardon him, and make honorable his reception. Expand his entry, and cleanse him with water, snow, and ice, and purify him of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange his home for a better home, and his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him into the Garden, protect him from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.
O Allah, so-and-so is under Your care and protection so protect him from the trial of the grave and torment of the Fire. Indeed You are faithful and truthful. Forgive and have mercy upon him, surely You are The Oft-Forgiving, The Most-Merciful
